About a decade ago, my dad and I shared a Suzuki DR350. It its lifetime, it had been stolen and recovered. However, the police hadn't updated one of the databases correctly, so when we went to tax it, it got flagged and taken away. Only after a lot of investigation on our end did we manage to get the bike back.

I hate that you have to explain yourselves for negotiating and buying a car in a fully consensual transaction for whatever price was agreed on. As if these keyboard justice warriors would ever go driving the price up in any transaction. What you did to go back and renegotiate your deal to benefit both parties was a completely optional but great and fair gesture but nobody should ever feel the right to tell you to do it. Keep doing what you do; if someone is selling something it's their responsibility to know what they are selling. Of course there's sympathy towards a seller that undervalues their product but if they are happy and you are happy I can never see a problem in that. The seller was not forced by neither you nor any bad financial situation (as far as we know) to carry out the transaction. And as you said you did not know all these facts about the car in advance.

Me and e39 have complicated history... I absolutely loved e34, and when e39 came out I hated it... Gone were quad lights, gone whatever was left from shark nose front, it wasn't a bmw to me... The Police can easily find out if there is another vehicle on the road using the same identify. A PNC check will only show you the last recorded keeper. So if there are two vehicles, the records will y que yoyo each time they are updated. A check of the VIN shows all the records. The Police should return the vehicle to you. They should also serve you with a notice which states that you will be prosecuted for theft, should you dispose of the vehicle before true love legal title is established.

Irrelevant, but true: in my home country Hungary 🇭🇺 you MUST bring every used motor vehicle to a paid vehicle check before you get the new V5 on your name. It’s mandatory by law. The cost is £35-50/vehicle, it’s called: Eredetiség vizsgálat. I worked 5+ years in that position where we checked the primary and secondary VIN numbers, engine number, and other hidden information (not including ECU data). We had metal X-ray to filter out the hand made or welded VINs, but mostly based on many years of experience and VIN databases. This is how they try to filter out many of the cloned Eastern European cars, vans and bikes. The failed vehicles are impounded and investigated by the police. They got automatic silent alert while the car is still in the test centre. (On a side note: that’s why the obvious clones are never got to the test centres, and stuck on the name of the previous owner forever).
